About the Role
Zed is building the world's best code editor with deep AI integration. This role focuses on building AI systems that operate within evolving codebases rather than static code snapshots, centered on DeltaDB — a system capturing the operational history of software development.
Zed is open source and built in public by the team behind Atom and Tree-sitter.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design systems enabling AI to participate in developer workflows
- Build infrastructure connecting language models with editors and developer tools
- Develop context systems helping models reason about large codebases
- Design evaluation frameworks for AI-assisted development
- Improve reliability, latency, and cost efficiency of AI features
- Collaborate closely with engineers through pair programming
Requirements:
- Production experience with large language models
- Strong understanding of model behavior, prompting, and evaluation
- Experience integrating AI into real software products
- Strong backend or systems programming background
- Interest in developer tools and programming environments
- Experience with Rust (or willingness to learn)
Preferred:
- Building AI coding assistants or developer tools
- Designing LLM evaluation systems
- Experience with tool-using or agent-style models
- Work with large codebases or compilers
- Rust proficiency
