Data Scientist / Engineer

Shift Technology is hiring a Data Scientist / Engineer in Boston to build AI solutions for insurance claims and underwriting. You construct and operationalize data pipelines for structured, text, document, and image data optimized for LLMs. You design, develop, and deploy LLM-based solutions including RAG, embeddings, and instruction tuning for document understanding and claims handling. You experiment with agentic AI technologies and develop prototypes for autonomous subrogation solutions. You create Chain-of-Thought and ReAct prompting strategies to justify liability determinations. You build custom agent tools for database queries and external API calls, and establish evaluation frameworks to ensure decisions are unbiased and legally sound. You lead client workshops and gather feedback to improve solutions in production.

Requirements: expert-level object-oriented programming for production systems. Hands-on LLM experience with RAG, embeddings, prompt engineering, and model tuning. Full machine learning lifecycle knowledge. Document and multi-modal data pipeline design experience. Agentic frameworks: experience integrating frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK, CrewAI, A2A/MCP. Strong client engagement and stakeholder management abilities. Desired: Databricks ecosystem expertise (Mosaic AI, Unity Catalog, Delta Lake) and MLflow experience.

Work model: hybrid in Boston (minimum once weekly on-site). Compensation: $80,000 - $110,000 USD base.
