AI Engineer II

Axle is hiring an experienced AI Engineer II to lead development of intelligent applications for translational research. This is a remote, full-time position with a focus on production-grade system design and direct client engagement.

Responsibilities

• Architect retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems and design embedding and vector search pipelines
• Develop agentic tools and pipelines for document understanding workflows
• Integrate structured knowledge (ontologies, controlled vocabularies, knowledge graphs) with unstructured text to produce evidence-grounded outputs
• Build document ingestion workflows that extract structured content from scientific materials
• Create shared platform services for AI application deployment
• Engage directly with clients to gather requirements and translate them into delivered systems
• Mentor other engineers and collaborate cross-functionally

Requirements

• 5+ years software development with recent AI/ML application work
• Strong Python proficiency
• Experience designing and operating RAG systems
• Vector database knowledge
• Docker and Kubernetes deployment expertise
• Strong communication and requirements-gathering skills with non-technical stakeholders

Preferred

• AWS experience
• Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP)

Compensation

$120,000 - $150,000 USD annually. Remote (US).
