About the Role

Microsoft AI (MAI) seeks a Member of Technical Staff to design and construct large-scale Copilot memory and personalization systems leveraging search, embeddings, retrieval, ranking, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).

Responsibilities

  • Apply subject-matter expertise across cross-product features and multiple groups
  • Serve as Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) with mentoring duties
  • Monitor systems for degradation, downtime, or service interruptions
  • Proactively identify emerging technical solutions and performance improvements
  • Operate in fast-paced, design-driven development cycles
  • Navigate ambiguity and deliver iterative solutions

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science (or related field) AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR Bachelor's degree AND 8+ years experience
  • OR Master's degree AND 6+ years experience
  • 4+ years building APIs and pipelines for large-scale products
  • Experience deploying machine learning or large language model (LLM) applications at scale
  • Comfortable operating amid ambiguity
  • Experience designing large-scale embedding, retrieval, and ranking systems

Salary

  • IC5: $139,900–$274,800 (US); $188,000–$304,200 (SF Bay Area/NYC)
  • IC6: $163,000–$296,400 (US); $220,800–$331,200 (SF Bay Area/NYC)

On-site requirement: 4 days/week minimum starting January 2026.
