Senior AI Systems Engineer (Contract)

Orium is investing in AI and automation to build agentic systems that support real human decision-making. We're hiring a Senior AI Systems Engineer for a 16-week, part-time contract (~20 hours/week) to design and build the technical foundations of those systems.

Key responsibilities:

• Design and implement agentic workflows enabling two-way interaction between humans, agents, and systems
• Build workflow orchestration using tools like Zapier, n8n, APIs, and event-driven architectures
• Transition prototypes into production-ready systems with strong reliability patterns and human oversight
• Work with LLMs and prompts prioritizing correctness and human accountability
• Develop retrieval and indexing approaches (RAG, structured knowledge sources) so agents operate on accurate, relevant, up-to-date context

Required experience:

• Building AI/LLM systems that emphasize reliability and safe failure
• Prototype-to-production experience with strong architecture and scaling expertise
• Backend systems, workflows, integrations, and automation frameworks
• Workflow orchestration tools proficiency (Zapier, n8n, Temporal, Airflow, or similar)
• Strong JavaScript/TypeScript backend development
• Comfort navigating ambiguous problem spaces independently
