Senior Software Engineer, Platform at Allen Institute for AI (Ai2)
Location: Seattle, WA (on-site required; varies by position/team)
Compensation: $126,000 - $189,000 base + bonus plans
Ai2 is a Seattle based non-profit AI research institute founded in 2014 by the late Paul Allen. Our mission is building breakthrough AI to solve the world's biggest problems. We are hiring 3 Senior Software Engineers to join the Agentic Applications team. This team builds open, production-grade AI systems that power scientific discovery.
Key Responsibilities:
The role focuses on building foundational systems for AI research agents. Core duties include:
- Designing and extending APIs that expose scholarly data to researchers and AI workflows
- Contributing to dashboards for evaluating data quality and model precision
- Scaling systems cost-effectively while improving reliability and automation
- Enhancing team velocity through software design and deployment tooling
- Establishing best practices for monitoring system availability, latency, and health
- Collaborating across engineering and research teams throughout the full development lifecycle
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree + 8+ years technical experience (or relevant experience substituting for degree)
- Strong Python engineering skills, with experience building production services
- Cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or similar)
- Containerization and deployment automation
- Experience integrating AI-powered capabilities into applications, including agent workflows, memory management, and external tool integrations
- Analytics/observability tools (Datadog or similar)
- API, SDK, or framework design
