Senior Software Engineer, Data at Allen Institute for AI (Ai2)
Location: Seattle, WA (on-site requirements vary by team)
Compensation: $126,000 - $189,000 base + bonus
Ai2 is a Seattle based non-profit AI research institute founded in 2014 by the late Paul Allen. Our mission is building breakthrough AI to solve the world's biggest problems. We are hiring 3 Senior Software Engineers to join the Agentic Applications team. This team builds open, production-grade AI systems that power scientific discovery.
Key Responsibilities:
The role involves building data infrastructure for AI research agents exploring scholarly literature. Primary duties include:
- Expanding and improving the Semantic Scholar corpus across academic papers, patents, and domain-specific datasets
- Constructing scalable data pipelines for corpus integration and metadata enrichment
- Deploying ML models for entity disambiguation and topic classification
- Designing APIs exposing structured scholarly data to researchers and AI workflows
- Creating evaluation dashboards for data quality assessment
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree + 8+ years technical experience
- Strong Python skills for data pipeline development
- SQL and PostgreSQL schema design in production environments
- ML workflows experience (model training, tuning, inference deployment)
- Proficiency with structured data formats (XML/JSON/Parquet) and ETL coding
- Workflow orchestration tools (Airflow or equivalent) and cloud infrastructure (AWS, S3, Docker)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Entity resolution and author disambiguation experience
- Vector similarity and topic modeling at scale
- Familiarity with scholarly data systems (arXiv, OpenAlex, USPTO)
- Building APIs for automated agent-based workflows
