Fixed-term: 2 years, extensible

About the Organization

Helmholtz Munich develops health solutions through AI, data science, and biomedicine. The Accessible Biomedical AI Research Group creates practical, transparent, and robust AI systems for scientists. The role sits in the Computational Health Center (CHC), Institute of Computational Biology.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design and implement modular, protocol-driven AI workflows for real-world research scenarios
  • Develop and maintain production-quality Python software to enable AI-assisted research processes across computational biology
  • Prototype, benchmark, and iteratively improve agentic systems with a strong focus on robustness, transparency, and reproducibility
  • Conduct researcher interviews to identify workflow pain points and automation opportunities
  • Collaborate on open, reusable infrastructure development
  • Contribute to publications and open-source initiatives in areas such as agentic AI, human-AI interaction, and reproducible computational science

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, AI, HCI, Computational Biology, Software Engineering, or a related field (or MSc with substantial professional experience)
  • Strong Python software engineering skills including testing and packaging
  • Experience building or working with agentic systems, LLM-based tool use, or workflow orchestration frameworks
  • Ability to design modular workflows and APIs
  • Strong interdisciplinary communication skills

Desirable Qualifications

  • User research methods experience
  • Familiarity with computational biology workflows, FAIR principles, or knowledge systems
  • Interest in human-AI collaboration design
  • Open-source contribution experience
