Engineering Team Lead, Applied AI (Internal Automation)

WorkFlex seeks an experienced engineering leader to oversee a distributed team of three Applied AI Engineers focused on internal automation. This is a player-coach hybrid role combining individual contribution (50%) with people leadership (50%).

WorkFlex is a rapidly growing HR Tech startup founded in 2021 and based in Germany, building the automated operating system for international travel compliance, tax, and duty of care.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a semi-autonomous squad (Guild structure) embedded across departments (Compliance, Customer Success, Operations)
• 50% hands-on development, 50% leadership duties
• Establish ROI metrics quantifying manual work hours saved quarterly
• Partner with department heads identifying high-impact automation opportunities
• Define technical standards for API integrations, deployment, and data security
• Mentor engineers on performance, career growth, and development
• Classical leadership: reviews, mentoring, career development

Required Qualifications

• Strong Computer Science/Software Engineering foundation
• Deep backend expertise: Python, Node.js/TypeScript, Docker, API design
• 1-2+ years people management experience in remote environments
• Advanced proficiency with LLM tools and orchestration (n8n, Claude, Cursor)
• Ability to translate operational challenges into technical roadmaps
